Lab session: practical tutorial

June 19, 2015, 9am – 12pm

Location: EM1-3509

The Molecular and Translational Radiation Oncology Research Group and  the Cancer Drug Discovery group of the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre  will organize a half-day practical tutorial featuring demonstrations of some cellular and molecular assays used to investigate and quantitatively assess the effects of ionizing radiation in cultured cancer cells. The principles, protocols and the end results of the following assays will be presented:

  • Radiation-induced DNA damage: Comet Assay
  • Effect of Ionizing Radiation/ In vitro cell survival assay:
    •  Clonogenic assay versus proliferation assay
    •  Analysis of the radiation dose survival curves
  • Radiation-induced senescence: senescence-associated β-galactosidase (SA-β-gal) Assay
  • Analysis of radiation-induced gamma-H2AX phosphorylation by western blotting

Please note that the space for the lab session is limited.  Registration is on first-come first-served basis.

Lab session tutors:

Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre, Glen site

  • Ayman Oweida (Translational Radiobiology Lab):  Effects of Ionizing Radiation: In vitro clonogenic cell survival assay
  • Mariia Patyka (Molecular and Translational Oncology Lab): Radiation-induced senescence: senescence-associated β-galactosidase (SA-β-gal) Assay
  • Zhor Senhaji (Cancer Drug Discovery Lab): Radiation-induced DNA damage: Comet Assay
  • Dr. Jose Mansure (McGill Urologic Oncology Research Lab ): Analysis of radiation-induced gamma-H2AX phosphorylation by western blotting

Lab facilities:

The research labs are located in the newly constructed McGill University Health Centre Cancer Centre on the Glen Campus. The RI-MUHC encompasses the clinical and translational research activities of five McGill teaching hospitals with 550 investigators and over 1,200 graduate students and clinical fellows at the Glen site.
